DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL
SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
Bishop John Smith invites the clergy and the faithful, of
the Diocese of Trenton, to journey with him to the Basilica
of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, on
Saturday, September 19, 2009. A pilgrimage is a devotional
act of faith that has been part of human religious
experiences for centuries. The journey of a pilgrim
symbolizes the spiritual journey of the disciple. We step
out of our normal routine and allow the physical journey to
stretch our souls as we journey into the mystery of God. We
discover our own need for conversion as we draw near to the
“Holy”. This year’s pilgrimage will take place during the
“Year of the Priest,” proclaimed by our Holy Father, Pope
Benedict XVI. Together we will travel to Mary’s shrine to
ask for renewed hope to face the challenges that face our
world and our Church. We will also raise our voices in
thanksgiving for the priests that minister to us, and to
pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. This
year, as a special devotion, Deacons will be present at the
Chapel of Our Lady of Hope to pray over each pilgrim. Please
make every effort to join this year’s diocesan pilgrimage to
the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception. For more information please contact Richard
Bannister at 890-8275.
